This is a depiction of Stomatolites which are layered and domed algal mats – a precursor to animal life itself and being cynobacteria they consumed atmospheric carbon and secreted valuable oxygen as a byproduct. The two plates with the reversed image is based on a section of rock of wave ripple cross-lamination from Bonahaven Islay , Scotland .Tidal coastal currents are reversible in direction hence the idea of doubling and reversing the image. The central plate depicts the laminated internal mushroom growth structure. By making a triptych it gives Stromatolite images a geometric abstract quality.
