2018年6月28日 - 9月1日
Zuleika Gallery and Dorfold Hall are delighted to announce a new collaboration this June. Sculpture in the Gardens at Dorfold Hall launches with the exhibition of work by emerging artist Samuel Zealey, appropriately titled ‘In the Dor(Fold)’.
Samuel Zealey is making his name one of Britain’s most sought after emerging sculptors. He studied at Wimbledon College of Art from 2005-08 and then at the Royal College 2010-2012 under the tutorage of Richard Wentworth. He currently has work on exhibition in Mexico as part of the Land Art Project and is also completing a public sculpture commission in Bracknell called Onyo in the shape of giant Jenga blocks. Other public commissions include Helix, for Spitalfields Public Sculpture Commission and Radar Reflector for Hastings Public Sculpture Commission In collaboration with The Saatchi Gallery, Hastings.
Zealey is exhibiting work from his Planes’ series from June until September 2018. These works take as their starting point the light and playful form of the folded paper airplane. Zealey likes to play on familiar forms and visual tropes in his work and give them quite literally a new dimension in both material and scale. Through his understanding of the principles of balance, physics, engineering and form, and his acute aesthetic sensibility, Zealey has transformed a relatively humble play object into a large scale sculpture with gravitas and visual weight. Zealey hails Richard Serra among his heroes, and the fascination with form and unapologetic sense of the monumental underpins both artist’s work. Zealey likes the interplay between with what he calls the ‘the polarities between weightlessness and gravity’. These works are intrinsically fun, and call to mind origami. They are a visual oxymoron – at once both weightless and weighty.
