This artwork was inspired by Green’s trip to the Democratic National Convention in the Mile-High Stadium, Denver, in August 2008. There were 70,000 people in the stadium doing a simultaneous wave when Obama accepted the nomination. It was an extraordinary moment of energy, timing and coming together, both in America and around the world.
Light, 2 Times features seven pairs of hands, repeated, intensifying the movement and creating a ‘wave’ like motion. This cyclical imagery is a symbol of unity and global connection, and of taking a stand.
The hands stand clearly against the high-density enamel white circle, the indigo blue silhouettes strengthened by the light, as if standing in front of a full moon in the depth of night. The layering of enamel paints results in a distinct three-dimensional depth to this work.
