This artwork was inspired by Green’s trip to the Democratic National Convention in the Mile-High Stadium, Denver, in August 2008. There were 70,000 people in the stadium doing a simultaneous wave when Obama accepted the nomination. It was an extraordinary moment of energy, timing and coming together, both in America and around the world.
This work is a distillation of this incredible moment. The imagery represents the momentous energy, it embodies the people of the world uniting. The image shows seven hands, with different gestures, all united in a white circle of light. It represents the non-verbal gestures that can communicate so much more than words. The circle represents the genesis of the cycle, all of the pieces are linked, and Day 1, intensifying the movement and creating a ‘wave’ like motion. This cyclical imagery is a symbol of unity and global connection, and of taking a stand.
The hands stand clearly against the 23ct champagne gold leaf circle, which has a very reflective surface. The hands silhouettes strengthened by the light and reflectivity, as if standing in front of a full moon in the depth of night. The layering of enamel paints results in a distinct three-dimensional depth to this work.
