Recalling the sailing regattas of his childhood in Le Havre, Henley Royal Regatta with its festive atmosphere, crowds of spectators, hundreds of boats on the Thames and brightly coloured flags had enormous aesthetic appeal for Maze.
Commenting in an interview with Wolfgang Fisher, co-founder of Marlborough Fine Art, in 1967, Maze said "The river life fascinated me..Henley in the summer.. There was plenty to paint and I decidedly went for all these manifestations of traditional English life".
