Early in 1953 discussions had begun with the Ministry of Works - the government department then managing the Government Art Collection - on how best to record the Coronation of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II which would take place on 2 June 1953. Twenty one artists were invited by the Minister of Works - Sir David Eccles to record on canvas their own individual impressions of that historic day, they included LS Lowry, Edward Seago, Julian Trevelyan and Paul Maze.

With broad brush strokes, Maze has captured all the splendour and pageantry of the procession of the Gold Coach of State as it travelled along the Mall towards Buckingham Palace following the Coronation service at Westminster Abbey. Another of Maze's paintings of the Gold State Coach arriving at Buckingham Palace was acquired by the UK Government Art Collection.
