A frequent guest at Blenheim Palace, Maze captures the view towards the Column of Victory which was based on designs by Nicholas Hawksmoor and built by Lord Herbert, later ninth Earl of Pembroke in 1727-30 to commemorate the 1st Duke of Marlborough's military successes at the Battle of Blenheim in the War of the Spanish Succession.
Describing one such occasion, Lady Rosemary Muir, daughter of the 10th Duke of Marlborough, recalled, "Paul Maze and his close friend, Winston Churchill, were out on the South Lawn painting when Mr Taylor, the butler, delivered a package to Mr Maze. The package contained a brand new set of pastels. Mr Taylor commented favourably on the painting Mr Maze was working on, “Oh it’s easy Taylor” said Mr Maze as he unwrapped his new set of pastels and, using the wrapping paper in which they had arrived, he quickly completed a sketch of the South Front of the Palace. That evening, Mr Taylor found the sketch waiting for him in his pigeonhole - signed (but not dated) by P Maze with the dedication, 'for Taylor'."
