Mill Cottage in Treyford, a small hamlet nestling in the Sussex Downs was Paul and Jessie's home from 1953. Jessie, their King Charles spaniels, the interior of the cottage, its garden and the surrounding countryside were to become the subjects of Maze's paintings in his twilight years.
Maze died at home on 17 September 1979, aged 92. A Service of Thanksgiving for his life and work took place in The Chapel of Royal Hospital, Chelsea on Friday 9th November 1979. The address was given by Lieutenant-General Sir Michael Gow.
Maze's great friend, Laurance Spelman Rockefeller (1910-2004) sponsored the publication of Paul Maze, The Lost Impressionist by Anne Singer. Published by Arium Press in 1983, it celebrates his colourful life and art.
