Clare enjoys observing urban life in her work. 'Summer Rain' is based on Oxford Street in London, during the rain. Clare delights in the visual patterns and colours caused by the figures in the rain. A painter-potter, Clare is a modern-day impressionist, observing the life of the bourgeoisie. The work subconsciously invokes the seminal painting of Paris in the rain by Gustave Caillbotte (1848-1894), Rue de Paris, Temps de Pluie, painted in 1977 and in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
