Much like the Parisians were captured by the Impressionists in the late 19th Century escaping to Argenteuil on the outskirts of Paris to undertake their leisure activities, so Clare captures Londoners escaping to the seaside town of Margate for a change of air from the city. Historically Margate has appealed to artists such as J M W Turner, and the pot here deliberately invokes Turners sunset for which Margate is so well know. The work is absolutely contemporary in conception and simultatenously nods to the past while bearing witness to the gentrification and rise of the bourgeoisie in Margate, now a pleasure destination for many with the arrival of the art gallery Turner Contemporary.
