The artist comments:
Nightwalker is an allegorical depiction of London by night seen through the eyes of my friend and house-mate, Hossein, a Kurdish-Iranian refugee. It is interpreted from his daily accounts of the London he encounters as a taxi-driver further coloured by our conversations over the past few years.
The row of apparently well to do houses in a street in Swiss Cottage is where Hossein lived for five years. Owned by a slum-landlord, however, it was anything but charming inside. When the bank repossessed it, Hossein had to leave, his room declared ‘unfit for human habitation.’
A Vladimir Putin-like character wearing a jester’s crown is shooting a stuffed bear at the Hyde Park fair-ground which has become a religious theme park. The Shia Mosque in Maida Vale, once a Bingo Hall, is behind the Kremlin which tops the ‘Winter Wonderland’ where Putin has found his bear. Pussy Riot have gathered on top of the roundabout, which is in front of the Orthodox Cathedral in Kiev, where the Ukranian group, Femen, tore down the Crucifix. The Vatican’s spiral staircase has become a brightly-lit helter-skelter. In front of the roundabout, Anjem Choudary, the Islamist preacher, has morphed into a transvestite stripper, parading her pieties as Champagne Lady Chaudary. Hossein himself features as Putin’s driver and also outside the fair, wearing a hat.
