Narrative is central to Ross’s work. It is a thread woven throughout the artist’s drawing and painting practice. Intent on keeping the work alive, the artist retains the initial marks and forms made in the building and layering processes, sometimes drawing in graphite, spray paint and oil sticks, at other times allowing the painting to go into and over the drawing, so that the process becomes one, and woven together into the whole.
“Music from the heart” expresses the language and fertility of the imagination that seeks to embellish personal histories unfolding as a story of the self. Some forms are hybrid, some creature, some human, some veiled.
A feminine presence is felt looking out at the viewer. An all seeing eye symbolic of a third eye.
The fluidity and unctuous quality of paint is an immensely sensual experience, one of control and non-control, a grappling of images, movements and marks that can resonate to trigger emotions, the unexpected forms and ideas that emanate from a fertile imagination. The materials are the Alchemist’s tools.
