Frustrated by political life, Churchill resigned from the government in the Autumn of 1915 and rejoined the army, whilst retaining his parliamentary seat. In 1916, Churchill took command of a battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers at Ploegstreet on the borders of France and Belgium. Enemy shells burst over his view of the village which was known as 'Plugstreet' to the troops.
