The artist discovered the ‘compelling’ Rhesus monkeys in the early 1990s at Regent’s park. “I couldn’t help but draw in charcoal and pain in oil their fun, energetic and mischievous characters. Monkeys are intelligent and instinctive. They are a reminder of our connection with nature.” Here the two monkeys express human qualities - the seated male monkey looks contemplative while the the play female above exudes a sense of fun and cheekiness. The psychological depth of this work is furthered by the temptation of the hanging fruit, and the watchful presence of a small green bird.
