This is the forth in the series of Keith Vaughan exhibitions that Zuleika Gallery has presented since 2020. Titled The Male Muse, it examines the artist as a man whose drawings, had they been found, would have seen him prosecuted at a time homosexuality was criminalised. It is sobering to think it was only 1967 when being gay was decriminalized and, even more recently in 2014, when same-sex marriage was legalized.
The exhibition acknowledges this and we are grateful to the artist, Luke Edward Hall, who has produced a response to this show, as well as author of Drawing to a Close : The Final Journals of Keith Vaughan, and president of the Keith Vaughan Society, Gerard Hastings, who has written an essay for the catalogue and will give a talk in Woodstock on 10th May.
