Nigel Hall studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol from 1960 to 1964 and at the Royal College of Art, London from 1964 to 1967. A Harkness Fellowship took him to the United States from 1967 to 1969. While he is known primarily for his work as a sculptor, his interest in space and the perception of it crosses the boundary of his media. As such, drawings and works on paper are an important part of his practise in which he continues his exploration of hidden dimensions. Hall has also produced many prints over the years.
His first tubular aluminium sculpture was made in 1970. In subsequent years he explored the ways in which tubular construction alters the viewer’s perception of space. This interest in the qualities of spatial construction was balanced by an equally strong pre-occupation with the particular sites his sculptures occupy. A solo exhibition of his work was held at the Royal Academy in 2011. In 2017, Hall was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Arts, London. Hall's current solo exhibition at the Towner Eastbourne continues until the 2 March 2025. Indeed, you can encounter his work in many public and institutional collections around the world.
