According to Paul Roche in a letter to John Constable on 1 April 1977, a year before Grant’s death, Atalanta’s Race was intended to be part of a series of mythological watercolours that appear not to have been completed. Mythological subjects and paintings relating to Greek legend appear in Grant’s work throughout his career.

A letter from Paul Roche writing on behalf of Grant regarding the the subject of this picture is dated April 1977 in which the artist states that a series were intended and some were completed. There is also confirmation in Grant's hand on the reverse of a black and white photograph of the picture, that this "... is indeed my Atalanta's Race"Grant was attracted to mythological subject and did a number of paintings after Greek legends.
