According to Paul Roche in a letter to John Constable on 1 April 1977, a year before Grant’s death, Atalanta’s Race was intended to be part of a series of mythological watercolours that appear not to have been completed. Mythological subjects and paintings relating to Greek legend appear in Grant’s work throughout his career.

Charles Aindow, Kendal from whom acquired by John Constable in 1975

Literature

A letter from Paul Roche writing on behalf of Grant regarding the the subject of this picture is dated April 1977 in which the artist states that a series were intended and some were completed. There is also confirmation in Grant's hand on the reverse of a black and white photograph of the picture, that this "... is indeed my Atalanta's Race"

Grant was attracted to mythological subject and did a number of paintings after Greek legends.
