Literature

Keith Vaughan : Journal and Drawings, 1966 "28 April 1944 Yesterday I went to  Castle Howard. From the York road you can see the bone - coloured mausoleum riding in a trough of the wooden hills. The house lies invisibly tucked between two further folds of the hills. The day was gentle with spring and the sun hot with summer in the hollows that were sheltered from the wind. The green reborn earth tapped against the carcass of myself in which I walked alone with a silent fidgeting crowd of wishes. .... At the top was the open sky and the elegant facade stood-against the trees in the distance. When I got to it everything seemed abandoned. there was no sound. ...... The front lawn lay in neat symmetrical design, drawn out with box hedges and centred by a fountain was hideous except the soft lichen crusted stone which seemed falling apart from excessive absorption of light. ... I walked along the wall of the orchard and through the half - ruined stables and the farm an out on to the road. The idiot obelisk rose monotonously in the distant line of trees. The road runs in a mathematically straight line from one obelisk to another with a rise in the middle topped by a sumptuous arch. .... At the far end was a notice saying 'Out of Bounds to all Troops'."
