Paul and Jessie Maze made West Sussex their home from the 1940s onwards, finally settling in the village of Treyford in 1953. With Goodwood nearby, Maze was a regular visitor to the racecourse.

Fascinated with the colour and movement and guided by a discerning eye, in this painting Maze captures the lively atmosphere and the excitement in the paddock before the start of the race, just as his first artistic mentor, Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) had done with his paintings of Ascot, Epsom and Goodwood in the 1930's.

"I painted my first picture at Honfleur at the market, very crowded, alongside Raoul Dufy! He gave me my confidence to stand being watched in my humble youth!" Paul Maze
