“I can see now from the perspective of fifty-five years making art that in the first half of my career I was interested in showing people the absurdity of life, but in the second half, with my Reverspective three-dimensional paintings, I let people experience this paradox for themselves (just as a good teacher should).” Patrick Hughes.
Zuleika Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of multiples and prints by renowned British contemporary artist, Patrick Hughes (b. 1939) including a brand new multiple, Banksi, and a new print, Love bothcreated in 2021. The exhibition will be presented physically at Zuleika Gallery, London from 26 April - 14 May and will coincide with an online Viewing Room at London Original Print Fair, 1 - 8 May 2021.
Hughes' original painted reliefs are concerned with optical and visual illusions, the science of perception and the nature of artistic representation. He has made a hundred editions of screenprints and is making his way towards a hundred editions of multiples. Banksi is Hughes' third multiple devoted to the work of Banksy. In this work, Hughes has made a more panoramic shape; it is wider and thinner, with three extra planes to move and turn. This new work has two ends featuring Banksy sculptures, ten walls wonderfully rendered as brick or concrete with a wide range of images creating a vivid representation of the highly regarded graffiti artist. Of his new print Love, Hughes comments, “When two people are in love, it feels as if the whole rainbow of emotions can travel back and forth from one cloudy heart to the other.”
